Join the Chicago Reader, the city’s most trusted cultural resource, for a botanically inspired evening. This Spring Fling after-party includes a panel at 4:30 with experts discussing how to grow and harvest cannabis at home, followed by dancing and vibing to floral-inspired sounds by Reader Best of Chicago Best DJ nominee DJ Tess, while enjoying Koval cocktails and Virtue Cider samples. Peruse the growing and cannabis-centered vendor tables, as well as the full Flower & Garden Show arena after hours.
Meet DJ Tess: Tess moved to Chicago in 2002 from Baton Rouge as a visual artist but eventually turned to the music scene for creative expression. In 2011, she co-founded award-winning dance party, Slo ‘Mo, and holds multiple residencies in the city, including Soho House and the Ace Hotel. Panel on Growing and Harvesting Cannabis at Home will run 4:30 PM-5:30 PM and includes:
Ashley Zborek, Justice Grown Illinois, Regional Director of Cultivation, will discuss what to look for when you buy seeds, and what one can learn about a strain/variety of cannabis by looking at the terpenes. Ashley quickly rose through the ranks at Justice Grown due to her expertise in environment, yield, and operational efficiency.
Shawn Odneal, Root 66, Hydroponic and Aquaponic (& HydroAquaponic) Home and Craft Grow Specialist, is a leader in growing space technologies. He will share what it takes to start a successful home grow. Shawn is a solar champion and a safe nutrient expert.
Avery Allen, Senior Manager of Post-Production at Grassroots Cannabis Illinois, will discuss decarboxylation, extraction techniques, how terpenes may be retained or lost, and share some insights on commercial kitchens. Avery oversees production at the Extraction Laboratory as well as the Edibles Kitchen at Grassroots Cannabis IL.
Please note that under the current laws in Illinois, medical cannabis cardholders are allowed to grow up to five mature plants in a secure location in their home (a maximum of five per home regardless of the number of cardholders in the home). Please read the statute or check with a state agency or attorney if you have questions regarding the law.
